Why do we need OxTech Fest?
Oxford is a city rapidly building a reputation as a leading tech hub in the UK and has a rich history of creating new technology start-ups, and computing and health tech are particularly strong.
Success stories include cybersecurity company Sophos, which achieved the largest IPO for a UK software company in 2015, as well as gaming giants Rebellion and NaturalMotion. It is a productivity hotspot with a £1.1 billion digital tech GVA and a £154k turnover per employee.
Given the public perception of Oxford as a digital innovation hub, we want to capitalise on this and expand Oxford Brookes’ and the Institute for Ethical AI’s reputation, by promoting Oxfordshire as a tech hub. By combining industry giants with local businesses, we aim to create an ecosystem of tech innovation in Oxford. Students and staff across the UK can attend the event, and with a virtual approach, we can promote this worldwide.
We are developing an event to highlight Oxfordshire’s tech and digital successes across a week-long virtual event. The Oxfordshire businesses will be joined by industry giants in technology such as Google, Microsoft and IBM.
With the Festival being powered by Catalyst (which will be open to businesses operating in Oxfordshire), we are expecting to further demonstrate that Oxford Brookes is increasing the accessibility of technology and inspiring more people to make the move to digital.
